A Drywall Patch Is Built in Layers

Drywall damage is rarely just a hole. A doorknob dent, a cracked seam, a water stain on the ceiling or a patch left by a previous owner all have to be repaired so that, once it is painted, nobody can tell where the damage was. Miguel Painting repairs drywall on interior walls and ceilings, and on exterior-facing surfaces where drywall is used, as part of getting a room ready to paint.

A good patch is built in layers. Small holes are filled with joint compound, while larger ones need a backer or a cut-in patch with paper or mesh tape across the seams. Compound is applied in several thin coats and sanded smooth between them, and each coat has to dry before the next goes on, which is slower in a humid Georgia house. After sanding the patch is primed with a sealing primer. Skip that step and the repair shows through the finish coat as a dull spot, an effect painters call flashing.

Matching texture is the other half of a repair. Many Marietta homes from the 1990s and 2000s have an orange-peel or light knockdown texture on walls and ceilings. A smooth patch on a textured wall stands out in side light, so we match the texture where we can. Water-stained drywall is a different story: find and fix the leak first, since a patch over a wet wall fails and the stain returns.

Signs Your Walls or Ceilings Need Drywall Repair

Even small blemishes show once a room is freshly painted, so it pays to fix them first.

  • Holes from doorknobs, furniture, anchors or removed shelves
  • Nail pops, where fasteners push through and leave small bumps or circles on the paint
  • Cracks along seams, above door frames or at ceiling corners
  • Peeling or bubbling tape at seams
  • Brown water stains or soft spots on a ceiling or wall, once the leak has been fixed
  • Rough patches left by a past repair that still show through the paint
  • Damage left from removed cabinets, mounted TVs or old fixtures

How We Repair Drywall

  1. Check the damage and find the cause

Miguel looks at each spot to see whether it is a simple hole, a stress crack or a water problem. A leak or settling crack that is still active is dealt with before cosmetic repair.

  2. Cut back to sound drywall

Loose paper, crumbling edges and damaged board are cut away so the patch bonds to firm material. Larger holes get a backer or a cut-in drywall patch.

  3. Tape and apply compound

Seams are taped with paper or mesh tape and bedded in joint compound. The patch is built with thin coats, feathered out well beyond the damaged area so the edge disappears.

  4. Sand between coats

Each coat dries completely and is sanded smooth. Humidity can lengthen drying times, so we do not rush a coat that is still damp. Dust is controlled and cleaned up.

  5. Match the texture

If the surrounding wall or ceiling has orange-peel or knockdown texture, we apply texture to the repair so it blends in side light.

  6. Prime and paint

The finished patch gets a sealing primer so it does not flash under the finish coat. We can repaint the wall or the whole room so the color is uniform.

What Affects the Cost of Drywall Repair

Drywall quotes depend on the number of repairs and how they need to be finished. These are the main factors.

Size and number of repairs

Several small nail pops or dings can be done in one visit, while large holes and long cracks take multiple coats and drying days.

Wall or ceiling

Ceiling work is slower than wall work because of the overhead position and the need for even blending under a raking light.

Texture matching

Smooth walls are simpler to patch. Textured walls require extra steps to blend the repair so it does not show.

Cause of the damage

Water damage or active cracking must be addressed first and may involve other trades before drywall work begins.

Painting afterward

Most repairs need painting to be finished, so the quote often covers patching plus paint on the repaired wall or the room.

Why Choose Miguel Painting for Drywall Repair

A patch that disappears

Thin coats, feathered edges, sealing primer and texture matching are what make a repair vanish. They take longer than a quick fill, and we do them anyway.

Repair and paint from one painter

The same person patches and paints, so the repair is prepped for the finish and there is no finger-pointing between trades.

Drywall Repair FAQs

Can you patch a hole in drywall so it is not visible?

Yes. Small holes are filled and larger ones get a backer or a cut-in patch, taped, coated, sanded, primed and painted. Matching the wall texture and repainting the wall evenly is what makes it invisible.

Why does my patched drywall still show through the paint?

Usually the patch was not primed with a sealing primer, or it was left smoother or rougher than the wall around it. Joint compound absorbs paint differently from painted drywall, which leaves a dull flashing spot.

How do I fix a water-stained ceiling?

First find and repair the source of the leak and let the area dry fully. Then the stained or damaged drywall is repaired, sealed with a stain-blocking primer and painted. Painting over a stain without fixing the leak means it comes back.

Can you match the texture on my walls?

In most cases, yes. Orange-peel and light knockdown textures are common in newer homes and can be applied to the repair so it blends. Tell us what the wall looks like when you request your quote.

How long does a drywall repair take?

A small patch can be done in a day, but compound has to dry between coats, so larger repairs usually take two to three days including priming. Humid weather can add time.
