Why Cabinet Painting Is Its Own Skill
Cabinets take more abuse than any other painted surface in the house: grease from cooking, steam from the dishwasher, hands on the same door fronts a hundred times a week. That is why cabinet painting is a different job from wall painting, and why a coat of wall paint on cabinets chips within months. Miguel Painting refinishes kitchen and bathroom cabinets with a process built around cleaning, bonding and curing, so the finish can handle daily use.
Painting is often the smart move in a Marietta kitchen. Many homes here have solid wood or good-quality cabinet boxes from the 1990s and 2000s in honey oak or cherry tones that look dated but are structurally fine. Replacing them is a major expense, while repainting keeps the same boxes, layout and countertops and changes the entire look of the room. We spray where the setup allows it and brush and roll where it does not, because a smooth finish with no brush marks depends on the tool as much as the paint.
We refinish doors, drawer fronts, face frames, end panels and islands, and we can work with new hardware if you want a full refresh. Tell us at the quote if the cabinets are laminate, thermofoil or heavily damaged, because those materials change the prep and what is realistic.

Is It Time to Paint Your Cabinets?
Painting works well when the cabinet boxes are sound but the look and finish are tired.
- Honey oak or orange-toned cabinets that make the kitchen feel dated but are still solid
- Worn, dark patches around knobs and pulls where finish has rubbed off
- A sticky, greasy film on doors near the stove that cleaning does not remove
- Chipped or peeling paint from an earlier DIY job that did not use a bonding primer
- Cabinet boxes in good shape, but a layout and countertops you are happy with
- A kitchen update before selling that has to fit a modest budget
- Bathroom vanities with swollen edges or worn finish from steam and splashes
How We Refinish Cabinets
- Assess the cabinets
Miguel checks the material, current finish and condition: solid wood, veneer, laminate or thermofoil. This decides the prep, the primer and whether painting is a good fit for your cabinets.
- Remove doors, drawers and hardware
Doors and drawer fronts come off and are labeled so they go back in the right spot. Hardware is removed, and the kitchen is masked so countertops, appliances and floors stay clean.
- Degrease and deglaze
Kitchen cabinets carry a layer of cooking grease that blocks paint adhesion. They are cleaned with a degreaser and then sanded or deglossed so the primer can grip.
- Fill, prime and sand
Dings and open grain are filled where you want a smooth look. A bonding primer goes on, then a light sanding between coats to remove dust nibs.
- Apply the finish coats
Two thin, even coats of durable cabinet paint go on, sprayed on doors and drawer fronts where possible for an even finish and brushed or rolled on face frames and boxes.
- Cure, reinstall and adjust
Paint feels dry long before it is fully cured, so we give doors time before they are rehung. Hardware is reinstalled or replaced and hinges adjusted so doors close evenly.
What Goes Into the Price of Cabinet Painting
Cabinet quotes depend on how many surfaces need work and what they are made of. These are the main factors.
Number of doors and drawer fronts
The door and drawer count is the biggest driver, since every face is cleaned, sanded, primed and coated on both sides.
Cabinet material and condition
Solid wood and veneer take paint well. Laminate and thermofoil need special primer, and damaged or swollen boxes need repair first.
Color change
Going from dark stained wood to white takes more coverage than refreshing a similar color.
Finish and method
A sprayed finish needs more masking and setup than brushed work but gives a smoother result. Extra clear topcoat adds durability.
Hardware and extras
New hardware, interior painting of cabinet boxes and inside-of-drawer work all add to the scope. The quote states clearly what is included.

Cabinet Painting FAQs
How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets?
Plan on about a week for a full kitchen: a couple of days for cleaning and prep, then primer and finish coats with drying time between them. Cure time afterward is why doors go back on last.
Will painted cabinets chip?
Any painted surface can eventually chip at high-wear spots, but a properly degreased, primed and cured cabinet finish holds up to daily kitchen use far better than ordinary wall paint. Careful use during the first few weeks while it cures helps.
Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?
Sometimes. These slick surfaces need a specific bonding primer and careful prep, and thermofoil that is already peeling is usually not a good candidate. We will look at them before quoting.
Do I need to empty the cabinets?
Yes, the contents need to come out of the cabinets and off the counters near them. Doors, drawers and hardware are removed, so clear space in another room to hold them during the job.
Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?
In most cases, yes, because you keep the existing cabinet boxes and layout. Replacement makes more sense when the boxes are damaged or you want to change the kitchen layout.
